Italy Extends Some Indoor Face Mask Rules Until 15 June

In a statement made by the Italian government on Thursday, the 28th of May, 2022 , it was stated that Italy will continue to wear masks in public transport and some indoor public places until June 15.

According to the news of the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, the obligation to wear masks in:

  • all public transportation vehicles such as buses, subways and trams

  • hospitals and nursing homes

  • cinemas and theaters

  • concert halls, discos and indoor sporting events

  • schools and universities

will continue until June 15, 2022.

Wearing masks in both public and private workplaces as of May 1 is "only highly recommended" with the exception of hospitals and care homes, health undersecretary Andrea Costa told the ANSA news agency on Thursday afternoon.

In which places will the obligation to wear masks be lifted from 1 May?

According to Italian media reports, from May 1 people living in or traveling to Italy are no longer required to wear masks in

  • bars

  • restaurants

  • shops

What type of mask do I need to wear in Italy?

Higher-grade masks, like Ffp2, will remain necessary for places like buses, subways and trams, planes, ships and ferries. They will be also required for performances in theaters, concert halls, cinemas and live music venues, for sporting events and competitions. In clubs, masks may be removed on the dance floor. However, upon entry and exit masks must be worn as a general rule.

Do I need a Green Pass after May 1?

According to Wanted in Rome "From 1 May, the government is to drop the Green Pass - the digital certificate proving the holder has been vaccinated or recently recovered from covid.

The lifting of these restrictions will include those relating to the Super Green Pass which can only be obtained by those who have been vaccinated or recovered from covid.

The Super Green Pass system will however remain in force until 31 December for those visiting hospitals and nursing homes."
